Description
Benin ‘Nigeria’ Bronze Standing Leopard Sculpture
After the original Benin bronzes, this statue depicts a large standing leopard with an upturned tail and unusually long legs, from the mid-20th century made in the same casting method but incorporates all the characteristics of earlier pieces. This impressive leopard has great depth and interest, makes a strong decorative statement, features a fine quality of detail, does show casting flaws as shown and a beautiful aged patina. The original Benin bronzes were created in the thirteenth century by the Edo-speaking peoples, is now modern-day Nigeria. Benin art is royal art, made to glorify the greatest king, or OBA, who is considered to have divine ancestory. Known for their bronze sculptures made by way of centuries old process ‘Lost Wax’, which produces one-of-a-kind pieces.
